Hi! My name is Lauren, I’m a graduating senior at Georgia State University in Atlanta. I’m a major in Sociology which means I’m interesting in analyzing the way systems of power operate, and how that hurts or helps certain people.
About the Project:
I want to make an in-depth series on YouTube about the prison system and the prison-industrial complex. It’s a complicated issue that cannot be boiled down to one five minute video, but it’s also something that people need to be educated about! I will be discussing this from an intersectional conflict ideology, especially taking race and class into account throughout. I will be using my previous classwork as well as books like “Invisible Punishment” by Meda Chesney-Lind & Marc Mauer and “Are Prisons Obsolete” by Angela Davis to inform these videos. All sources will be cited!
A Very Tentative Breakdown of Videos:
2: History/World Prison Systems
3: Why the Prison System Just Doesn’t Work
4: Privatization of Prisons
5: War on Drugs
8: Gender & Sexuality
9: Violence in Prisons
These lovely donations will go to both the hardware needed to film good quality videos as well as the labor and time that goes into writing, creating, and editing these videos.
I’m sure I will also need help in other ways, potentially including design and marketing, etc. If you feel like you have any sort of skill/job experience that could help out and you’re interested, send me a short cover letter & resume, especially if you’re in Atlanta and double especially if you’re sociologically minded.
If you have any questions/comments/concerns/suggestions, feel free to contact me!
Thank you all for your support, and even if you can’t help out monetarily, even just talking about this and sharing it with your friends will help in a huge way.
